Flying salmon at Seattle's Pike Place Market has entertained and thrilled visitors and locals for decades, but PETA says enough is enough.

"We came here for the fish throwing," said Ginny and Donald Gaskamp. "We came all the way from Texas. It's cool, I'm glad we came."

"We think it sends a terrible message to the public..." said Lindsay Rajt, a PETA spokeswoman in Norfolk, Va. "Fish feel pain and fear just like dogs and cats do and I don't think the AVMA would dare take part in the dead kitten toss. Really, morally, there is no difference between throwing around dead kittens and throwing around dead fish.

We're talking about dead fish here folks! "http://www.komonews.com/news/47410357.html

Apparently, PETA has offered to supply the market with rubber salmon to save the dignity of the dead fish! Now how compassionate is that?

So what do you think? Should the tradition continue, or do we ground the flying salmon at the market?

A fella can't even fling a dead fish around without stepping on someones sensitive little toes anymore. What's this goofy world coming to anyway? Bunch o' wimps!

Washington State literally oozes of tree-huggers, anarchists, and flaming liberals (I mean "Progressives". Sorry!). In fact, the deep blue Pacific gets its color from WA's percipitation run off! PETA loves the place!

I say let the fish fly!

Oh....my.....gawd.....

Go away PETA, or we'll expose you for your euthanisation processes. Oh wait, that's already been done:

PETA IS BAD

It is MORE than time to ground PETA! What ever happened to that IRS investigation into the tax-exempt status of PETA since they continually get involved in political things?????? (ie anti-breeder laws, anti-pet laws, anti-fishing, hunting, circus, whatever their pea brains can think of laws)

PETA...how about sticking to protecting LIVE animals?

Ridiculous. They're fish. Next thing you know, they'll want tuna to come in solid pieces in those cans. I mean cutting up the fish to can them could be regarded as cruelty. Or maybe the tuna guys will be forced to include the heads, because cutting them off could also be regarded as...well, you get the idea.

No more contributions for PETA from AB of Seattle.

We love the Pike Place Fish Market. And I don't think the fish mind being tossed around. At least they're appreciated.

If I knew it would bring joy to people from all over the country... I'd let them toss MY corpse around. At 290 lbs... it might be a little more challenging for them, though.

Let me see if I understand this correctly... the point PETA is making is that fish have feelings, too and we shouldn't throw dead ones around because we wouldn't throw around dead cats.

Okay.... fair enough. But we also don't eat dead cats. In general, cats are considered as warm, loveable, cuddly creatures whom we maintain as household pets (some of us). Not as a staple to our diet. And the last time I checked, none of my friends keep salmon around as pets. Summary: salmon = food, cat = pet.

So my vote is that it is NOT okay throw around pets but it IS okay throw food. After all, who doesn't like a good food fight? :) If people in Seattle enjoy watching fish being tossed around, well... it isn't hurting the fish. They are dead, after all. I seriously doubt the fish care about keeping their "dignity" intact.

I also doubt whether a salmon cares whether they are being tossed by humans or eaten by bears. The point is, they live and they die. Like we all do. The manner in which we are treated after death is of no relevance to US when we die... just to those that love us. And I don't see salmon petitioning Washington to stop the tossing of the fish. Sounds to me like PETA was bored. I would rather they concentrate their efforts on abused, neglected, living animals.

More to the point, I'm positive that salmon which are dead don't care about anything.

Except that we EAT the fish and don't eat the kittens. I'm not sure how throwing dead fish causes them pain. PETA really needs someone else to go save. What's the deal with animals being so much more important than humans anyways?

So, they throw fish around essentially, and people find that entertaining? I've never been to Seattle.

I've never been there but my friend is from seattle. The fish market has these guys that will throw the fish pretty impressive distances and always catch them. I believe it started as just wanting to save time and it's fun to throw stuff to they would just toss it from the back to the front where the customer was buying it. now it's more of a tourist attraction and is one of the things that makes pike's place market famous.
